SUNSAT Science Laboratory Handed Over: A Milestone for Somaliland’s Higher Education

Sheikh, Somaliland – The Sheikh University of Natural Sciences and Technology (SUNSAT) has officially received the handover of its newly constructed Science Laboratory building, marking a significant step forward in the university’s journey toward academic excellence.

The two‑storey facility is designed to house four specialized laboratories:

• Mining and Petroleum Lab
• Hydrology Lab
• Climate and Environmental Sciences Lab
• Energy Lab (Renewable and Non‑Renewable)

These laboratories will serve as national referral labs, offering dual functionality: supporting student learning and research, while also providing testing services to industries in mining, water, energy, and environmental sectors.

The handover ceremony was attended by Government officials at the national, regional, and district levels, as well as representatives from DP World Berbera and DP World Horn of Africa. SUNSAT Board members, project partners, and community leaders were also present.

The building was generously funded by DP World Berbera.

This milestone brings SUNSAT closer to its goal of commencing academic operations in the 2026/2027 academic year. The laboratories will play a critical role in equipping the next generation of scientists and engineers with practical skills, while also contributing to the sustainable management of Somaliland’s natural resources.
